Newcastle Blue Star Vs Wakefield – Match Report
On a sunny Wednesday evening NBS kicked off their home campaign at Kingston Park against a strong Wakefield line up.
A lively start from the hosts saw them take the lead after only 8 minutes when new signing Bell crossed the ball into the area, albeit after some fancy footwork, and David McTiernan hammered the ball home.
McTiernan then received a nice ball from Townsley on the right wing, he crossed it in but, unfortunately Novaks effort went wide. The action then was up at the other end where NBS keeper Lowson fumbled a free kick but Wakefield’s Ferguson was unable to capitalise at the far post.
NBS played very effective, creative attacking football which resulted in a lot of goal mouth action, and put Wakefield under pressure. Wakefield conceded a free kick after a foul on McTiernan which Nicholls took. The free kick found Bell who headed narrowly over the bar. Influential captain Nicholls set up an attack, finding Novak on the left, his deep cross to the far post saw McTiernan volley a fierce shot back across the goal but wide.
On the 27 minute mark a clumsy tackle by Carr in the area resulted in a Wakefield penalty. Howarth hit the spot kick low to Lowson’s left for the equaliser, and his third goal of the season. NBS reacted badly to the blow and after starting so well were left longing for the half time whistle.
Wakefield came out for the second half the stronger team and Pringle defended well, including denying Ferguson a goal from the 6-yard line. NBS were then delivered some more bad luck when new boy Bell went down with an ankle injury and had to limp off but, was replaced by a lively Dean Critchlow.
NBS retook the lead on 55 minutes when Hooks crossed from the right and Novak volleyed in for his second goal of the season. Twenty minutes later Wakefield nearly equalised once again but, Lowson managed to get his finger tips to the ball and push it round his post.
It was a cruel ending for NBS who battled well to keep the lead when on the 93rd minute Ferguson tried a long-range shot, which got deflected on the way leaving Lowson helpless.
A good game, with a lot of positive play from NBS, and they remain unbeaten.
