Skelmersdale United Vs Newcastle Blue Star
As Blue Star arrived in Lancashire it was doubtful as to whether the game would go ahead due to what can only be described as monsoon conditions! However, referee Mr Kettlewell decided the game would be played.
Wayne Gordon put Blue Star ahead in the first 2 minutes of the game when he intercepted a back pass and slotted the ball into the top left hand corner of the net. 1-0 up to Blue Star!
Then just before half time Skelmersdale player Kevin Leadbetter almost levelled the scoring but his shot was cleared off the line, then his next shot from the resulting corner went narrowly round the post.
The game should not have continued after half time as the conditions were terrible. The ball kept stopping, making passing truly impossible and the goal lines were just big puddles!
However, the referee decided to play on and in the 52nd minute Tony Evans equalised for Skelmersdale with a header that reached into the top right hand corner, following a cross by Compton, leaving the Star keeper with little chance of saving.
Unfortunately in the 62nd minute Skelmersdale scored the winner when Kevin Leadbetters 20-yard free kick flew straight into the bottom right hand corner.
The game ended 2-1 to Skelmersdale but Blue Star put in a grand performance on what was an awful pitch due to the conditions.
