Newcastle Blue Star Vs Wakefield FC
The match started strangely as Wakefield came out with only 10 men as the full team couldn’t manage to make it to Kingston Park in time for kick off, even after it was delayed! However, they were back to a full strength 11-man squad within approximately 10 minutes from the start.
Newcastle started very brightly, looking confident in defence (despite Carr serving the last game of his suspension), and creating exciting play and chances upfront. We managed to keep up this lively play for the full first half, totally out-playing Wakefield - who never tested Star keeper Ryan Smith.
However chance after chance went amiss and we just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net. Until the 45 minute when a low cross found both Star striker Bell and Wakefield defender Laight, the ball looped up into the top corner past the helpless Woods. 1-0 Blue Star.
In the second half Newcastle started very well again. On 53 minutes Novak nearly doubled the lead but the ball smashed agonisingly close top the wrong side of the post.
Douglas came on for Bell and Newcastle seemed to fall apart. They lost their shape and Wakefield began to play. Then, on 62 minutes Wakefield equalised through Jay Sobers – a great goal. Smith didn’t stand a chance.
On 68 minutes Newcastle should have took the lead but it was one of those games where we did all the hard work, creating the chances but couldn’t capitalise on them and turn them into goals.
The game fell into extra time. During this period Wakefield were on top and on the 110 minute mark were awarded with a penalty after a Leon Scott hand ball. Howarth stepped up and Wakefield won 2-1. Very disappointing.
