Radcliffe Borough V Blue Star
Bank holiday Monday saw Blue Star travel to Manchester to play Radcliffe Borough and record their first win in eight games. And they did won in spectacular form with striker Mark Sheeran scoring three!
However, the Blue Star fans started to despair after seeing their side throw away a three-goal lead, only to be rescued with a stoppage-time penalty.
It all started so well for the Tynesiders, with Mark Sheeran and David McTiernan providing a formidable pair – proving too much for the Radcliffe defence.
It was Sheeran who put Blue Star ahead with a brilliant volley after being set up by McTiernan. Then McTiernan ran for 25 yards before also slotting into the back of the net.
Baker’s side were rampant at this stage and McTiernan was again the provider for Sheeran, whose tap-in at the far post had Blue Star three goals ahead inside half-an-hour.
Just before the interval Stephen Houson reduced the deficit, but even so Newcastle did not look in danger, especially with keeper Dan Lowson in commanding form.
Lowson kept Radcliffe at bay, but two goals in 14 minutes by Houson again, and Michael Oakes stunned Blue Star – and for a time it looked as if they might return home empty handed.
But three minutes into injury time McTiernan was brought down and Sheeran stepped forward to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot.
“Although I’m disappointed that we conceded three goals when we were so much on top, at the end of the day we gained all three points, which was our first victory for some time.
“We are leaving the UBL at the end of the season, but we want to win as many points as possible – and yesterday’s victory was important.” said Director of Football Bob Morton. |
