Blue Star Vs Clitheroe
The Star get the first win of their league campaign with a 3-1 victory over Clitheroe, despite a mediocre performance.
Blue Star got the all important breakthrough in the 19th minute when the ball was played back from a narrow angle and then driven home from the edge of the penalty box by former Gretna midfielder David Nicholls. The lead was then doubled in the 33rd minute with a placed shot from David McTiernan which flew past the Clitheroe keeper, and Lowson made an impressive save when he went one on one with Clitheroe striker Will Exton just before half time.
Deja vu! In the first part of the second half, Lowson pulled another fine save from a one on one this time with Joel Byrom. But a disappointing second half performance from Blue Star saw Clitheroe on top and the away team finally captalised with a goal in the 55th minute as Gary Jackson headed the ball home. However, 5 minutes later Dean Critchlow drove in the Tyne-siders third and final decisive goal.
New manager Tommy Cassidy told The Chronicle "We did okay during the first half, but Clitheroe were the better side in the second period. Fortunately for us, they didn't take their chances."
"We have a difficult game coming up at Ossett Albion (who are currently top of the league) on Wednesday night, and perhaps after next Saturdays game with Benfied Bay Plastics, I'll have a better idea of what needs doing."
"Everyone here at Kingston Park seems very determined to take the club forward. It will be quite a task here but I'm here for the long journey."
